Transportation Research Board AV030
Environmental Impacts of Aviation
Aviation Climate Subcommittee (AV030(2))

The Aviation and Climate Change Subcommittee was formed during the 2007 Mid-Year meeting of the Aviation and the Environment Committee, which included a workshop in Boulder, Colorado, regarding the current state of scientific research regarding the effects of aviation on the climate.  Presentations from this workshop can be found here.

The Aviation and Climate Change Subcommittee is interested in fostering and disseminating research regarding the effects of aviation on climate, potential effects of climate change on the aviation industry, adaptation to such changes, and means of reducing aviation’s effects on climate.  The Subcommittee works to identify critical research needs on the subject, encourage such research and share developing research.  Subcommittee members have two Critical Issues in Aviation and the Environment papers undergoing peer review, which are expected to be published in the second half of 2008.  In addition, the Subcommittee sponsored sessions at the TRB 2008 Annual Meeting regarding carbon offsets and the calculation of emissions from aviation activities.  In conjunction with the Sustainability Subcommittee, it also held a session at the 2008 Mid-Year Meeting in Toronto regarding the life-cycle environmental analysis of alternative aviation fuels.

Later in 2008, we anticipate pulling together a web library of relevant documents and studies regarding aviation and climate change.  An interim version is available.

Please contact Subcommittee Chairperson John Putnam at (303)825-7000 or jputnam@kaplankirsch.com for more information or to be included on the Subcommittee e-mail list.

Membership:

TRB subcommittees do not have a formal membership roster, but are intended to attract participation from individuals who will form the membership group in the event that sufficient interest is generated in the topic that the subcommittee is elevated in the future to a task force or a full committee. We encourage participation in the subcommittee from all segments of the aviation industry including educators, researchers, regulators and NGO’s with associated interests.
